Our Story

Thenwhat? Charity was born on Mother's Day 2020 when two friends (Samantha and Lisa) were having a conversation.  Lisa, who is an educator, was sharing a story of one of her parents who said that she had nothing in the home to eat, for herself or her children.   That instantly propelled them into a mode where they raided their pantries and asked friends to donate to help this mother in need.   Coming out of that the two acknowledged the great work the Government had done with the provision of food hampers for Barbadians, but lamented on the fact that, after it's gone, especially if there are a lot of person in the home- THEN WHAT? and that was it, the Charity was born, Samantha roped in her cousin, Joy, and the three spoke about, being a part of the solution and not the problem.   The aim is to assist vulnerable persons ( single parents and the elderly, special emphasis on single fathers, with a basic needs hamper for a period of three months.  During that time the hope is that persons can catch up on bills or other necessary items.   This is year 6, and the self-funded charity has continued to grow!

Hampers Of Hope

To date, our Hamper of Hope Program has provided support to over 1,000 families through direct assistance and emergency care packages. As demand continues to grow, we are currently able to assist up to 10 families each month. Unfortunately, the increasing number of requests has outpaced our resources, and it deeply saddens us when we must turn individuals away. We are committed to expanding our reach, but we need your support to continue making a difference. We recently ( 2026) introduced an empowerment segment which is a perquisite for being selected for a Hamper.   Persons must join a one hour empowerment session, to assist with Business Development/ Marketing or CV/Job preparation.

Knowledge for All Tutoring Progam

We have enlisted a number of tutors who are willing to give an hour of their time each week, to tutor persons, from primary to adult level.  Our believe the root cause of poverty is the lack of education.

New2U Clothing Program

We receive a large amount of clothing  ( new and gently used) which we use in our bartering pop up shops.  In our bartering pop up shops we exchange food items for clothing.  Some persons also wish to purchase clothing and all items are sold at below cost price.  We are hoping to open our thrift store in 2026, where we can provide items for those in need and to make revenue to fund our projects.

Back to School Program

Every year 10 schools ( 5 primary & 5 Secondary) are selected and two back packs filled with necessary stationary supplies are provided.   In 2024 we included goody bags for the teachers.  This bag contained stationary and supplies which will be used in the classroom

The Christmas Hamper Drive

During Christmas we try to do a bit more to our Hampers of Hope, we tend to open up the Hamper Drive to more families and provide food items and gifts for the children.

Mentorship & Scholarship

This mentorship program sees persons aged 15 and up engage with us and tell us what skill they’re interested in.  We take them through the process of learning about the area they want to pursue, after attending sessions we award 5 scholarships to assist persons in the area they wish to learn.  This program is funded by a private donor, however we are looking to increase the number of recipients.  In 2026 we partnered with Second Chance lessons-Barbados to provide 5 skilled based scholarships.

Back to School Grant

In 2024 we partnered with Melbourne Inn, where we granted 6 back to school grants of $250 each.  These are awarded to persons who have the potential but not the resources.

Empowerment Sessions

Every quarter we host empowerment sessions.  These are catered to teens, unemployed/under employed persons, Men and women.
